The Glory of the Gita

Eighteen tales from the Varaha Purana — one for each chapter — showing how a single teaching can change a life forever.

Long ago, Goddess Lakshmi asked Lord Vishnu: "Of all the scriptures in the universe, which one do you love the most?"

Vishnu smiled and said: "The Bhagavad Gita. It is my very breath. Every chapter is a jewel, and whoever holds even one jewel close to their heart is freed from all sorrow."

Then he told her eighteen stories — one for each chapter of the Gita — to show how the light of a single teaching can change everything.

These stories come from the Padma Purana and Varaha Purana. They are traditionally read at the end of the Gita, like a garland placed around the book after the last verse is finished.

The Brahmin and the Serpent

अर्जुनविषादयोग — Arjuna Vishada Yoga

In a village near Kashi, a brahmin named Susharma had lived a careless life. When he died, his bad karma caused him to be reborn as a serpent — a great cobra trapped in a dark burrow beneath the roots of a banyan tree.

For years the serpent lay coiled in the dark, unable to speak, unable to pray. But one day, a wandering sage sat under that very banyan and began to recite the first chapter of the Gita aloud — the chapter where Arjuna's heart breaks with sorrow on the battlefield.

As the words entered the serpent's ears, something loosened in his heart. The weight of old selfishness cracked, the way dry earth cracks when the first rain falls. The serpent shed his skin, and from within emerged a being of light — Susharma, freed at last, rising toward the heavens.

Even sorrow, when honestly felt, is the beginning of wisdom.

The Farmer Who Could Not Die

सांख्ययोग — Sankhya Yoga

Devadatta was a farmer who feared death more than anything. He would not cross rivers, climb trees, or travel after dark. His fear shrank his world until he lived in a single room, afraid even of sleep.

A visiting monk gave him a simple task: memorize just one verse from the second chapter of the Gita — the one that says the soul can never be cut, burned, or destroyed.

Devadatta repeated the verse every morning. Slowly, the words became real to him. If the soul cannot die, then what was he afraid of? He began crossing rivers again. He climbed the mango tree in his yard. He traveled to see the sea.

When he finally died — peacefully, in old age — his last words were that verse. And death, it turned out, was only a door.

The Miser's Open Hands

कर्मयोग — Karma Yoga

Janakirama was the richest man in his town and the stingiest. He hoarded gold coins the way a squirrel hoards nuts — not because he needed them, but because he could not bear to let go.

One monsoon, the river flooded the town. People came to Janakirama for help — he had grain, he had gold, he had a strong house on high ground. But he shut his doors and sat on his chest of coins, watching the water rise.

That night, a sadhu knocked. Janakirama almost did not open the door, but something made him. The sadhu asked for nothing except to read aloud from the third chapter of the Gita — the one about the great wheel of giving and receiving that keeps the world turning.

When the reading was over, Janakirama looked at his locked chest and for the first time saw it for what it was: a prison. He flung the doors open. He fed the town. He gave away blankets and grain. And with each thing he gave, something tight in his chest loosened, until he was breathing freely for the first time in years.

The King Who Remembered

ज्ञानकर्मसंन्यासयोग — Jnana Karma Sannyasa Yoga

King Bharata ruled a prosperous land but grew weary of the endless cycles of court politics and war. He gave up his throne to live in the forest, seeking peace. But in the forest he became attached to a baby deer he had rescued, and when he died, his mind was so full of the deer that he was reborn as one.

Even as a deer, a faint memory stirred — the memory of seeking something higher. When he was reborn again as a human, he remembered everything. This time, he found a teacher who read him the fourth chapter of the Gita, where Krishna reveals that divine knowledge has been passed down since the beginning of time.

"Every birth was a step," Bharata understood. "Even the wrong turns brought me here." He never forgot again.

The Washerman's River

कर्मसंन्यासयोग — Karma Sannyasa Yoga

A washerman named Dharmabandhu spent his days at the river, scrubbing other people's clothes clean while his own mind stayed muddy with worry and envy. He envied the merchants their gold, the priests their respect, the soldiers their strength.

One day he found a torn page from a manuscript caught in the wet cloth he was washing. It was a verse from the fifth chapter of the Gita: the one that says a person who works without attachment is untouched by sin, like a lotus leaf untouched by water.

Dharmabandhu laughed — he, who stood in water all day, had never been like a lotus! But the verse stayed with him. He began to wash each garment as an offering, not a burden. The envy drained away. The river was the same, the work was the same, but the washerman was new.

The Restless Boy

आत्मसंयमयोग — Atma Samyama Yoga

A boy named Keshava could not sit still. His mother tried everything — stories, sweets, threats. In school he fidgeted until the teacher gave up. Everyone said he would never learn.

His grandmother took a different approach. She sat him down and said: "The sixth chapter of the Gita says that the mind is like the wind — wild and hard to catch. But Krishna also says that with practice and detachment, it can be steadied. Even the wind can be caught."

She gave him one task: sit still and count ten breaths. Just ten. The first day, he counted three before jumping up. The second day, five. By the tenth day, ten. By the thirtieth day, he could sit for an hour, watching his thoughts like clouds crossing a mountain.

The wind was the same. But Keshava had become the mountain.

The Four Who Seek

ज्ञानविज्ञानयोग — Jnana Vijnana Yoga

Four travelers met at a crossroads and discovered they were all going to the same temple. The first was in trouble and wanted God's help. The second was poor and wanted wealth. The third was curious and wanted to understand how the universe worked. The fourth wanted nothing at all — she simply loved God.

A sage at the temple told them: "The seventh chapter of the Gita says all four of you are dear to Krishna. But the one who loves without wanting anything — that one is dearest."

The four looked at each other. Over the years, they all arrived at the same place: the first stopped being afraid, the second stopped feeling poor, the third found answers beyond questions. And the fourth? She had been there all along.

The Last Thought

अक्षरब्रह्मयोग — Akshara Brahma Yoga

An old woman named Savitri knew she did not have long to live. She was not afraid of death, but she worried: what would her last thought be? Would it be about her aching knees, or the unpaid milk bill, or old grudges?

Her son read her the eighth chapter of the Gita, where Krishna says: "Whatever a person thinks of at the moment of death, that is what they become."

"Then I must practice," Savitri said. She began ending each day by sitting quietly and thinking of the divine — the light in the lamp, the warmth in her son's hands, the vast sky at dawn. She practiced this for months.

When the end came, her face was calm. Her last word was a name she had been practicing — not the name of fear, but the name of love.

The Leaf, the Flower, and the Water

राजविद्याराजगुह्ययोग — Raja Vidya Raja Guhya Yoga

A poor tribal woman lived on the edge of a great forest. She had no money for temple offerings — no gold, no silks, no elaborate puja items. She felt unworthy.

One day she overheard a priest reading the ninth chapter of the Gita: "Whoever offers me a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water, with love — I accept it."

That evening, she picked a single leaf from the neem tree, filled her clay cup with river water, and placed them before a stone she had always felt was sacred. She offered them with her whole heart.

That night, she dreamed of a blue-skinned boy smiling at her, holding her clay cup as if it were the most precious thing in the universe. She never felt unworthy again.

The Boy Who Saw Krishna Everywhere

विभूतियोग — Vibhuti Yoga

After hearing the tenth chapter of the Gita — where Krishna reveals that he is the best of everything: the Himalayas among mountains, the Ganges among rivers, the lion among animals, the syllable Om among sounds — a young student named Madhav began to see differently.

"If Krishna is in the best of everything," he thought, "then every mountain has a little Himalaya in it. Every stream has a little Ganga. Every sound has a little Om."

He began pointing things out to his bewildered friends: "Look — Krishna in the sunrise. Krishna in that old banyan. Krishna in the way your mother calls your name."

His friends thought he had gone a little mad. But his teacher smiled and said: "No. His eyes have opened. That is what the tenth chapter does."

The Vision That Changed Everything

विश्वरूपदर्शनयोग — Vishvarupa Darshana Yoga

A proud scholar named Vidyapati had memorized the entire Gita but believed it was only poetry — beautiful words, not truth. He could recite every verse but felt nothing.

One night during a thunderstorm, lightning split the sky and for one blinding instant Vidyapati saw — not with his eyes but with something deeper — the vision Arjuna saw in the eleventh chapter: all of creation pouring into a single blazing form, all faces, all times, all worlds, birth and death happening simultaneously.

It lasted less than a heartbeat. But when it passed, Vidyapati was on his knees, trembling. The words he had memorized were no longer just words. They were a map of something real.

He never recited the Gita the same way again. Every verse now shook with thunder.

The Gardener's Devotion

भक्तियोग — Bhakti Yoga

A simple gardener named Tulasi could not read. She could not chant mantras or sit in meditation for hours. She felt she was not spiritual enough.

A kind teacher told her about the twelfth chapter of the Gita, where Krishna lists the qualities dearest to him — and none of them require scholarship. Compassion. Friendliness. Forgiveness. Contentment. Steadiness.

"Do you feel compassion when you see a wilted plant?" the teacher asked.

"Of course," Tulasi said.

"Do you feel joy when it blooms?"

"Always."

"Then you are already practicing the highest yoga. You simply did not know its name."

Tulasi went back to her garden and tended her flowers, and this time she knew what she was really tending.

The Field and the Knower

क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञविभागयोग — Kshetra Kshetrajna Vibhaga Yoga

Two brothers farmed side by side. One complained endlessly about the soil, the rain, the pests. The other worked quietly, whatever came.

A traveler asked the quiet brother: "Your fields are the same size, the same soil, the same rain. Why is your harvest always better?"

The brother said: "My guru taught me the thirteenth chapter of the Gita. It says this body is a field, and the soul is the knower of the field. Once you stop confusing the field with the knower, you stop blaming the soil for your suffering. You just tend the field."

The traveler looked at the two farms. Same earth, same sky. One man fought his field. The other knew he was not his field.

Beyond the Three Strands

गुणत्रयविभागयोग — Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga

A weaver woman made three kinds of thread: white (pure and fine), red (strong and restless), and black (heavy and dull). Every cloth she wove had all three, in different proportions.

A traveling monk watched her work and said: "You are weaving the fourteenth chapter of the Gita. White is sattva — goodness. Red is rajas — restless energy. Black is tamas — heaviness. Every person is woven from these three strands."

"Can anyone be made of only white thread?" the weaver asked.

"No," said the monk. "But Krishna says there is something beyond all three. The one who watches the weaving — the soul — is not any thread at all."

The weaver looked at her hands and for the first time noticed: she was not the cloth. She was the one making it.

The Tree That Grew Backwards

पुरुषोत्तमयोग — Purushottama Yoga

A child once drew a tree upside down — roots reaching into the sky, branches spreading down toward the ground. Her teacher scolded her: "Trees don't grow like that!"

But her grandfather, who was reading the fifteenth chapter of the Gita, looked at the drawing and smiled. "Actually," he said, "Krishna describes exactly this. The cosmic ashvattha tree has its roots in heaven and its branches spread down into the world. Everything we see is just the branches. The real roots are above, in the divine."

The child stared at her drawing. "So I was right?"

"More right than you know," said her grandfather. "The wisest thing is to look at the world and remember: the roots are not here. The roots are above."

Two Gates, One City

दैवासुरसम्पद्विभागयोग — Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga

A great city had two gates. The northern gate was carved with images of generosity, fearlessness, and truth. People who entered through it walked with their heads high and their hands open.

The southern gate was carved with images of pride, anger, and greed. People who entered through it walked with clenched fists and narrowed eyes.

The sixteenth chapter of the Gita says every person has both gates inside them — the divine qualities and the demonic ones. You choose which gate to walk through every single day, with every single decision.

An old gatekeeper who had watched people come and go for fifty years said: "The gate you use most often becomes the only gate you can see."

Three Kinds of Food

श्रद्धात्रयविभागयोग — Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga

A cook named Annapurna served three meals at a festival.

The first was fresh, light, and nourishing — ripe fruit, warm rice, fragrant dal. People who ate it felt clear and content.

The second was spicy, sour, and rich — heavy with oil and chili. People who ate it felt excited but restless.

The third was stale, cold, and leftover. People who ate it felt sluggish and dull.

A wise woman watching said: "The seventeenth chapter of the Gita describes exactly this. What you eat, how you worship, and what you give — all of it comes in three kinds, matching the three gunas. Choose the food that makes your mind as clear as still water."

Annapurna smiled. She had always known this in her hands. Now she knew it in her heart.

The Final Word

मोक्षसंन्यासयोग — Moksha Sannyasa Yoga

After all seventeen stories, Goddess Lakshmi said to Vishnu: "And the eighteenth chapter? What is its glory?"

Vishnu was silent for a long time. Then he said:

"The eighteenth chapter contains everything. It is the chapter where Krishna says: 'Give up all other paths and simply come to me. I will free you from all fear.' It is the chapter where Arjuna says: 'My confusion is gone. I will do as you say.' And it is the chapter where Sanjaya says: 'Wherever Krishna and Arjuna are, there is goodness, victory, and joy.'

"The glory of the last chapter is this: it is not an ending. It is the moment when the student stands up, picks up the bow, and walks into life — changed forever, afraid of nothing."

Lakshmi smiled. The universe hummed. And the book was complete.

॥ इति श्रीवाराहपुराणे श्रीगीतामाहात्म्यम् सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Thus ends the Gitamahatmyam from the Varaha Purana.

The Gita is not a book you finish. It is a book that finishes you — and then begins you again.
