The Yoga of the Cosmic Vision
This is the most spectacular chapter! Arjuna asks to see Krishna's true form, and Krishna gives him special eyes to see it. Arjuna sees the entire universe — all the stars, all living beings, past and future — inside Krishna's body. It's so amazing and overwhelming that Arjuna trembles with wonder and asks Krishna to return to his gentle, familiar form.

madanugrahāya paramaṁ guhyamadhyātmasaṁjñitam | yattvayoktaṁ vacastena moho'yaṁ vigato mama || | Arjuna Arjuna says: out of pure kindness to me, you have spoken the highest secret: the teaching about the true Self. And because of those words, the confusion that was clouding my heart has completely gone away. He is thanking Krishna: the fog has lifted, and now he can see clearly again. |
bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṁ śrutau vistaraśo mayā | tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa māhātmyamapi cāvyayam || | Arjuna Arjuna says: O lotus-eyed one, I have heard from you, in great detail, how all beings come into being and how they pass away. And I have heard, too, of your endless, imperishable glory. He has listened to everything Krishna has taught, and now those words have made him hungry to know even more. |
evametadyathāttha tvamātmānaṁ parameśvara | draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpamaiśvaraṁ puruṣottama || | Arjuna Arjuna says: it is exactly as you describe yourself, O Supreme Lord. I do not doubt a single word. And yet, O Highest of all Persons, I long to see your divine, lordly form with my own eyes. He believes Krishna completely; now he asks, gently and humbly, to behold the truth he has only heard. |
manyase yadi tacchakyaṁ mayā draṣṭumiti prabho | yogeśvara tato me tvaṁ darśayātmānamavyayam || | Arjuna Arjuna says: if you think it is possible for me to behold it, O Lord of all yoga, then show me your eternal, undying Self. He adds a gentle 'if' — he knows the vision may be too great for a human to bear, and he leaves the choice in Krishna's wise hands. |
paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ | nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca || | Krishna Krishna says: behold, Arjuna! See my forms — by the hundreds, by the thousands, of every kind, all of them divine, in countless colours and countless shapes. He is telling Arjuna that he is not one shape but every shape there is, more than anyone could ever finish counting. |
paśyādityānvasūnrudrānaśvinau marutastathā | bahūnyadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi paśyāścaryāṇi bhārata || | Krishna Krishna says: behold the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the two Ashvins, and the Maruts too, and behold many marvels never seen before, Arjuna. Inside his one form, Krishna is showing whole families of shining gods, and wonder upon wonder that no human eye had ever looked upon. |
ihaikasthaṁ jagatkṛtsnaṁ paśyādya sacarācaram | mama dehe guḍākeśa yaccānyaddraṣṭumicchasi || | Krishna Krishna says: behold now, gathered together in one place, the whole universe — everything that moves and everything that stands still — here, in my body, Arjuna. And whatever else you wish to see, see that here too. The entire cosmos, with nothing left out, is held within the single form of the Lord. |
na tu māṁ śakyase draṣṭumanenaiva svacakṣuṣā | divyaṁ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogamaiśvaram || | Krishna Krishna tells Arjuna: you cannot see Me with the ordinary eyes you were born with. They were not made for this. So I give you a divine eye. With it, behold the majesty and power of My true form. Some things, Krishna is saying, cannot be seen until you are given a new way of seeing. |
evamuktvā tato rājanmahāyogeśvaro hariḥ | darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramaṁ rūpamaiśvaram || | Sanjaya Sanjaya tells the blind king Dhritarashtra what is happening far away on the battlefield, seen through his divine sight: having spoken those words, Hari, the great Lord of yoga, showed Partha His supreme, sovereign form. The moment of the great vision had come. |
| Verse 11.10 | अनेकवक्त्रनयनमनेकाद्भुतदर्शनम्। anekavaktranayanamanekādbhutadarśanam | anekadivyābharaṇaṁ divyānekodyatāyudham || | Sanjaya Sanjaya keeps describing the form to the king: it had countless mouths and countless eyes, and showed countless marvellous sights. It wore countless divine ornaments and held countless divine weapons, all raised and ready. Wherever Arjuna looked, there was more — more faces, more eyes, more wonders, with no edge and no end. |
divyamālyāmbaradharaṁ divyagandhānulepanam | sarvāścaryamayaṁ devamanantaṁ viśvatomukham || | Sanjaya Sanjaya continues: the form wore divine garlands and divine robes, and was anointed with divine fragrances. It was the shining God, made of every wonder, endless, with faces turned toward every direction at once. There was no front and no back to look upon — every side of the universe was His face. |
divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā | yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ || | Sanjaya Sanjaya reaches for the only comparison big enough: if a thousand suns were to rise in the sky all at once, their blaze might — just might — come close to the splendour of that great-souled One. One sun already lights our whole world. Imagine a thousand, all at once. Even that, Sanjaya says, would only begin to match it. |
tatraikasthaṁ jagatkṛtsnaṁ pravibhaktamanekadhā | apaśyaddevadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavastadā || | Sanjaya And there, Sanjaya tells the king, the son of Pandu saw the whole universe — all of it, divided into its countless parts — resting together in one place, inside the body of the God of gods. Every world, every being, every place Arjuna had ever known was held within that single form, like many rooms inside one great house. |
tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo hṛṣṭaromā dhanañjayaḥ | praṇamya śirasā devaṁ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata || | Sanjaya Then Arjuna, Dhananjaya the winner of wealth, was filled with wonder, and the hair on his body stood on end. He bowed his head low to the God, joined his palms together, and began to speak. He could not stay standing tall and proud before such a sight. His whole body answered first, with awe, before his words could come. |
paśyāmi devāṁstava deva dehe sarvāṁstathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān | brahmāṇamīśaṁ kamalāsanasthamṛṣīṁśca sarvānuragāṁśca divyān || | Arjuna Arjuna gasps as the vision opens before him. "I see all the gods inside Your single body, O Lord — and crowds of every kind of creature too. I see Brahma the creator seated on his lotus throne, all the wise rishis, and the shining divine serpents." Everything that exists, high and low, is gathered in one form. Arjuna is looking at the whole universe at once. |
anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṁ paśyāmi tvāṁ sarvato'nantarūpam | nāntaṁ na madhyaṁ na punastavādiṁ paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa || | Arjuna The form keeps growing. "I see You with arms beyond counting, bellies beyond counting, faces and eyes beyond counting, stretching away in every direction," Arjuna says. "And though I look and look, I cannot find where You end, or where Your middle is, or where You ever began. O Lord of all worlds, O You whose body is the whole universe — You have no edges at all." |
kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakriṇaṁ ca tejorāśiṁ sarvato dīptimantam | paśyāmi tvāṁ durnirīkṣyaṁ samantāddīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam || | Arjuna Now Arjuna sees the Lord crowned and armed. "I see You wearing a shining crown, holding the mace and the discus, a great heap of blazing light glowing on every side." But the light is so fierce that it hurts to look at — like trying to stare straight at the sun and a roaring fire at once. "You are too bright to gaze upon, and far too vast to measure," he says. |
tvamakṣaraṁ paramaṁ veditavyaṁ tvamasya viśvasya paraṁ nidhānam | tvamavyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā sanātanastvaṁ puruṣo mato me || | Arjuna Now Arjuna understands who he is seeing. "You are the imperishable, the highest truth that everyone should come to know. You are the great resting-place that holds the whole universe up. You never change and never fade. You are the guardian who keeps goodness safe forever." With wonder, Arjuna says: "You are the eternal Spirit. This is what I now believe You to be." |
anādimadhyāntamanantavīryamanantabāhuṁ śaśisūryanetram | paśyāmi tvāṁ dīptahutāśavaktraṁ svatejasā viśvamidaṁ tapantam || | Arjuna Arjuna sees the form even more fiercely now. "You have no beginning, no middle, no end. Your strength is endless and Your arms are countless. The moon and the sun are Your two eyes, and Your mouth is a blazing fire." With Your own heat, he says, You warm and scorch this whole universe. The Lord is so immense that the sun and moon themselves are merely His eyes looking out. |
dyāvāpṛthivyoridamantaraṁ hi vyāptaṁ tvayaikena diśaśca sarvāḥ | dṛṣṭvādbhutaṁ rūpamugraṁ tavedaṁ lokatrayaṁ pravyathitaṁ mahātman || | Arjuna Arjuna sees the form fill all of space. "The whole space between heaven and earth, and every direction too, is filled by You alone." Nothing is left over, nothing is outside Him. And seeing this wondrous, fierce, awesome form, Arjuna says, all three worlds are trembling. "O Great Soul, the entire universe shakes before You." |
amī hi tvāṁ surasaṅghā viśanti kecidbhītāḥ prāñjalayo gṛṇanti | svastītyuktvā maharṣisiddhasaṅghāḥ stuvanti tvāṁ stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ || | Arjuna Arjuna watches the gods themselves respond to the vision. "Look — these hosts of gods are entering into You. Some, in awe, fold their palms and call out in praise." And the great sages and perfected ones cry "Svasti! May all be well!" and sing You rich and beautiful hymns. Even the shining gods are amazed; even the wisest sages can only bow and praise. |
rudrādityā vasavo ye ca sādhyā viśve'śvinau marutaścoṣmapāśca | gandharvayakṣāsurasiddhasaṅghā vīkṣante tvāṁ vismitāścaiva sarve || | Arjuna Arjuna keeps looking, and everywhere he turns he sees more. The storm-gods and the sun-gods, the shining Vasus, the gentle Sadhyas, the All-gods, the two healer-twins, the wind-gods, the ancestors, and the great crowds of heavenly musicians, nature-spirits, titans, and perfected ones. Every single one of them is staring at Krishna's vast form, their eyes wide with wonder. Even the mighty beings of heaven have never seen anything like this. |
rūpaṁ mahatte bahuvaktranetraṁ mahābāho bahubāhūrupādam | bahūdaraṁ bahudaṁṣṭrākarālaṁ dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitāstathāham || | Arjuna Arjuna speaks straight to Krishna now: this great form of Yours has so many mouths and eyes, so many arms and legs and bellies, and rows of fangs that look frightening. Seeing such a vast and powerful shape, all the worlds are trembling — and so am I. The wonder has grown so large that it makes even a brave warrior shake. |
nabhaḥspṛśaṁ dīptamanekavarṇaṁ vyāttānanaṁ dīptaviśālanetram | dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṁ pravyathitāntarātmā dhṛtiṁ na vindāmi śamaṁ ca viṣṇo || | Arjuna Arjuna says: I see You touching the sky, blazing with light, shining in countless colours, Your mouths wide open and Your great eyes burning like fire. Seeing You like this, my very heart is shaken inside me. I cannot find my steadiness, and I cannot find my calm, O Vishnu. The vision is so huge and so bright that the bravest part of him cannot stay still. |
daṁṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni | diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa || | Arjuna Arjuna says: when I see Your mouths with their terrible fangs, glowing like the great fire that ends an age, I lose my way completely. I no longer know which direction is which, and I can find no comfort anywhere. Please be gracious to me, O Lord of the gods, O home of all the worlds. He is not asking the vision to stop being grand; he is asking the grand One to be kind. |
amī ca tvāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ sarve sahaivāvanipālasaṅghaiḥ | bhīṣmo droṇaḥ sūtaputrastathāsau sahāsmadīyairapi yodhamukhyaiḥ || | Arjuna Now Arjuna sees the people he knows inside the vision. All the sons of Dhritarashtra, along with their crowds of allied kings, and Bhishma the grandfather, and Drona the teacher, and Karna the charioteer's son, and even the foremost warriors of his own side, all of them are there, moving toward Krishna's vast form. The cosmic vision has stopped being about far-off gods. It has become about the very faces Arjuna loves and fears. |
vaktrāṇi te tvaramāṇā viśanti daṁṣṭrākarālāni bhayānakāni | kecidvilagnā daśanāntareṣu sandṛśyante cūrṇitairuttamāṅgaiḥ || | Arjuna Arjuna keeps watching as the warriors he knew a moment ago rush quickly into Krishna's fearsome, fang-rimmed mouths. Some of them, he sees, are caught fast in the gaps between the great teeth, their heads already crushed. It is the most frightening thing Arjuna has ever seen. The vision shows him plainly that everything that lives must one day pass into the One who made it. |
yathā nadīnāṁ bahavo'mbuvegāḥ samudramevābhimukhā dravanti | tathā tavāmī naralokavīrā viśanti vaktrāṇyabhivijvalanti || | Arjuna Arjuna gives the vision a picture that any child can hold. Just as the many rushing rivers of the world all run toward the one great sea, hurrying to lose themselves in it, so all these heroes of the human world are pouring into Krishna's blazing mouths. Everything that flows must reach the ocean at last; everything that lives returns to the One from whom it came. |
yathā pradīptaṁ jvalanaṁ pataṅgā viśanti nāśāya samṛddhavegāḥ | tathaiva nāśāya viśanti lokāstavāpi vaktrāṇi samṛddhavegāḥ || | Arjuna Arjuna says: just as moths come flying out of the dark and dive straight into a blazing flame, faster and faster, rushing to their own end — in exactly the same way all these worlds and all these people pour headlong into Your fiery mouths. They cannot stop themselves. Nothing escapes the great fire that You are. |
lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantāllokānsamagrānvadanairjvaladbhiḥ | tejobhirāpūrya jagatsamagraṁ bhāsastavogrāḥ pratapanti viṣṇo || | Arjuna Arjuna says to Vishnu: with Your flaming mouths You are licking up and swallowing all the worlds from every direction at once. Your fiery light fills the whole universe, edge to edge, and Your fierce rays scorch everything they touch. You are too bright, too vast, too burning to bear — and yet there is nowhere I can look that You are not. |
ākhyāhi me ko bhavānugrarūpo namo'stu te devavara prasīda | vijñātumicchāmi bhavantamādyaṁ na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim || | Arjuna Arjuna pleads: tell me who You are, You of such fierce and terrible form! I bow to You — please, O best of gods, be gracious to me. I long to know You, for You are the first one, the source of everything. But I do not understand Your purpose. I cannot grasp what You are doing here, and it frightens me. So I ask: who are You, really? |
kālo'smi lokakṣayakṛtpravṛddho lokānsamāhartumiha pravṛttaḥ | ṛte'pi tvāṁ na bhaviṣyanti sarve ye'vasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ || | Krishna Krishna answers: I am Time, grown vast and mighty, the destroyer of all worlds, and I have come forth here to gather every being to its end. Even without you, Arjuna, none of these warriors standing arrayed in the opposing armies will be left alive. Their hour has already come. The great wheel of time turns whether you act or not. |
tasmāttvamuttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva jitvā śatrūnbhuṅkṣva rājyaṁ samṛddham | mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvameva nimittamātraṁ bhava savyasācin || | Krishna Krishna says: therefore, arise! Win glory, defeat your enemies, and enjoy a thriving kingdom. These warriors have already been struck down by Me, long before this moment. You, Arjuna, skilled with the bow, are only meant to be My instrument, the hand that carries out what is already decided. Do your part well, and leave the great outcome to Me. |
droṇaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ ca jayadrathaṁ ca karṇaṁ tathānyānapi yodhavīrān | mayā hatāṁstvaṁ jahi mā vyathiṣṭhā yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān || | Krishna Krishna says: Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna, and the other brave warriors too. They have already been slain by Me. So strike, Arjuna; do not lose heart or tremble. Fight, and you will conquer your foes in battle. Their fate is already written; your task is only to act with courage and a steady heart. |
etacchrutvā vacanaṁ keśavasya kṛtāñjalirvepamānaḥ kirīṭī | namaskṛtvā bhūya evāha kṛṣṇaṁ sagadgadaṁ bhītabhītaḥ praṇamya || | Sanjaya Sanjaya tells the blind king: after hearing these words of Krishna, the crowned Arjuna, trembling and with his palms pressed together, bowed low. Then, frightened and overcome, he bowed again and spoke once more to Krishna — but his voice came out in a stammer, choked with awe and fear. Even the greatest warrior could only whisper before the cosmic form. |
sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā jagatprahṛṣyatyanurajyate ca | rakṣāṁsi bhītāni diśo dravanti sarve namasyanti ca siddhasaṅghāḥ || | Arjuna Arjuna says: it is right and fitting, O Lord of the senses, that the whole world rejoices and glows with love when it praises you. The demons, terrified, scatter in every direction, while the great gatherings of perfected sages bow down to you. Seeing the cosmic form, Arjuna understands at last why all of creation reaches toward Krishna with delight, and why only fear runs from him. |
kasmācca te na nameranmahātmangarīyase brahmaṇo'pyādikartre | ananta deveśa jagannivāsa tvamakṣaraṁ sadasattatparaṁ yat || | Arjuna Arjuna asks: how could they not bow to you, O Great Soul? You are greater even than Brahma, the very first creator. O Endless One, Lord of the gods, home of all the worlds — you are the imperishable, the changeless. You are both being and non-being, and that which lies beyond them both. Arjuna sees that nothing in all creation could possibly stand above Krishna, so of course every wise being bends the knee. |
tvamādidevaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇastvamasya viśvasya paraṁ nidhānam | vettāsi vedyaṁ ca paraṁ ca dhāma tvayā tataṁ viśvamanantarūpa || | Arjuna Arjuna says: you are the first God, the most ancient Person, the supreme resting place of all this universe. You are the knower and the very thing to be known; you are the highest home. O One of endless form, the whole universe is spread through and through by you. Arjuna sees that Krishna is the one who knows everything, the one worth knowing, and the place where everything finally comes to rest. |
vāyuryamo'gnirvaruṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ prajāpatistvaṁ prapitāmahaśca | namo namaste'stu sahasrakṛtvaḥ punaśca bhūyo'pi namo namaste || | Arjuna Arjuna says: you are Vayu the wind, Yama who keeps order, Agni the fire, Varuna of the waters, the moon, Prajapati the maker of creatures, and the great-grandfather of all. Salutations to you a thousand times, and again, and yet again! Arjuna realises that every god he has ever named is really one and the same Krishna, so he can only bow and bow and bow. |
namaḥ purastādatha pṛṣṭhataste namo'stu te sarvata eva sarva | anantavīryāmitavikramastvaṁ sarvaṁ samāpnoṣi tato'si sarvaḥ || | Arjuna Arjuna says: salutations to you from the front and from behind, salutations from every side, O All! You are endless in courage and boundless in might. You reach into everything and fill it completely, and so you yourself are everything. Arjuna bows in every direction because there is no direction where Krishna is not. |
sakheti matvā prasabhaṁ yaduktaṁ he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti | ajānatā mahimānaṁ tavedaṁ mayā pramādātpraṇayena vāpi || | Arjuna Arjuna says: thinking of you only as my friend, I spoke to you rashly, calling out 'Hey Krishna! Hey Yadava! Hey friend!', not knowing this greatness of yours. I did it carelessly, or perhaps just out of love. Now that he has seen who Krishna truly is, Arjuna remembers all the casual, cheerful ways he used to speak to him, and his heart fills with worry. |
yaccāvahāsārthamasatkṛto'si vihāraśayyāsanabhojaneṣu | eko'thavāpyacyuta tatsamakṣaṁ tatkṣāmaye tvāmahamaprameyam || | Arjuna Arjuna says: and for whatever disrespect I showed you in fun — while we were playing, resting, sitting, or eating, whether alone or in front of others, for all of that, O Unfailing One, I beg your forgiveness, you who are beyond all measure. Having seen Krishna's true greatness, Arjuna gently asks pardon for every small careless moment of their long friendship. |
pitāsi lokasya carācarasya tvamasya pūjyaśca gururgarīyān | na tvatsamo'styabhyadhikaḥ kuto'nyo lokatraye'pyapratimaprabhāva || | Arjuna Arjuna says: you are the father of this whole world, of everything that moves and everything that stands still. You are the one to be worshipped, the greatest teacher of all. In all the three worlds there is no one equal to you — so how could anyone ever be greater? Your power has no match anywhere. |
tasmātpraṇamya praṇidhāya kāyaṁ prasādaye tvāmahamīśamīḍyam | piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuḥ priyaḥ priyāyārhasi deva soḍhum || | Arjuna Arjuna says: so, bowing low and laying my whole body down before you, I beg for your grace, O Lord most worthy of praise. Please forgive me — bear with me the way a father bears with his son, a friend with his friend, a lover with the one he loves. Be patient and kind with me, O God. |
adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ hṛṣito'smi dṛṣṭvā bhayena ca pravyathitaṁ mano me | tadeva me darśaya deva rūpaṁ prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa || | Arjuna Arjuna says: I am thrilled and amazed to have seen what no one ever saw before, and yet, at the very same time, my heart is trembling with fear. So please, O God, show me that other form again, the one I knew. Be gracious to me, O Lord of all the gods, O home of the whole world. |
kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakrahastamicchāmi tvāṁ draṣṭumahaṁ tathaiva | tenaiva rūpeṇa caturbhujena sahasrabāho bhava viśvamūrte || | Arjuna Arjuna says: I long to see you just as you were before: wearing your crown, holding your mace, with the discus in your hand. O thousand-armed Lord whose body is the whole universe, please take on that gentle four-armed shape again, the one I know and love. |
mayā prasannena tavārjunedaṁ rūpaṁ paraṁ darśitamātmayogāt | tejomayaṁ viśvamanantamādyaṁ yanme tvadanyena na dṛṣṭapūrvam || | Krishna Krishna says: because I was pleased with you, Arjuna, and out of my own great power, I have shown you this highest form, full of light, holding the whole universe, endless, the very first of all. No one before you has ever seen this form of mine. It was my gift to you alone. |
na vedayajñādhyayanairna dānairna ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ | evaṁrūpaḥ śakya ahaṁ nṛloke draṣṭuṁ tvadanyena kurupravīra || | Krishna Krishna says: not by studying the Vedas, not by offering sacrifices, not by giving gifts, not by performing rituals, and not even by the fiercest, hardest practices can anyone in the whole world of human beings see me in this great form, no one except you, O brave hero of the Kuru family. |
mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo dṛṣṭvā rūpaṁ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam | vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṁ tadeva me rūpamidaṁ prapaśya || | Krishna Krishna says: do not be afraid, and do not be bewildered, just because you have seen this terrible form of mine. Let your fear go and let your heart be glad. And now look once more upon this same familiar form of mine, the gentle one you know. |
ityarjunaṁ vāsudevastathoktvā svakaṁ rūpaṁ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ | āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītamenaṁ bhūtvā punaḥ saumyavapurmahātmā || | Sanjaya Sanjaya tells the blind king what happened next. Having spoken to Arjuna in this way, Krishna folded away the vast, blazing cosmic form and showed His own familiar shape again. Then the great soul, becoming gentle once more, comforted the frightened Arjuna with His kind and pleasing face. The storm of light had passed, and the friend Arjuna knew was standing before him again. |
dṛṣṭvedaṁ mānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ tava saumyaṁ janārdana | idānīmasmi saṁvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṁ gataḥ || | Arjuna Arjuna breathes out at last. Seeing Your gentle human form again, Janardana, I am settled now. My mind has come back to me. I have returned to my own nature, to the steady, ordinary self I knew before the vision shook me. The fear has let go of him, and Arjuna is simply himself once more. |
sudurdarśamidaṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama | devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṁ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ || | Krishna Krishna tells Arjuna how rare a gift he has been given. This form of Mine that you have seen is very hard to see. Even the gods, the shining ones in heaven, forever long to catch a glimpse of it. What you beheld with your own eyes is something the highest beings keep wishing for and rarely receive. |
nāhaṁ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā | śakya evaṁvidho draṣṭuṁ dṛṣṭavānasi māṁ yathā || | Krishna Krishna says plainly: not by reciting the Vedas, not by hard penance, not by giving gifts, and not by ritual sacrifice can I be seen in the form in which you have just seen Me. All the study, all the effort, all the offerings in the world cannot, by themselves, make this vision happen. There is only one thing that can, and Krishna is about to name it. |
bhaktyā tvananyayā śakya ahamevaṁvidho'rjuna | jñātuṁ draṣṭuṁ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṁ ca parantapa || | Krishna Here is the one thing that works. But by undivided love and devotion alone, Arjuna, can I be truly known, truly seen, and even entered into. When your heart turns to Me and to nothing else, you do not just learn about Me. You see Me as I really am, and you come right into My being, discovering you were never truly separate from Me at all. Love is the key that all the books and rituals could not turn. |
matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ | nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava || | Krishna This is the heart of the whole chapter, the gift Krishna leaves Arjuna with. The one who does My work, who holds Me as the highest, who loves Me, who is free from clinging, and who carries no hatred toward any living being — that person comes to Me, O son of Pandu. Do your work for the Lord, love with your whole heart, and hate no one. That is the path home. |
